The Spoken X
The word is out. The word is up. The word is X.
Bluedot provided graphics art services, cd mastering and duplication, music video and web development services for this spoken word rock and roll band. Enjoy!
Thread of Joy
Tony Kaltenberg and Michael Manring perform the song “Thread of Joy” at the Yachats Guitar Festival, 2008.
VJ’ing by bluedot productions using rear projection, and modul8.
Sand Mandala Timelapse
When the Gaden Shartse Monastic Tour visited our hometown in 2008, we had the opportunity to mount an HD 1080p camera to the wall above the mandala table. We then ran the camera directly to a Macpro via firewire so it could create daily quicktimes.
The creation of a sand mandala is a sacred event that creates a vortex of intention and prayer into a tangible blessing that can be felt by anyone. The intricacy and attention to detail is unmatched, and the symbolism unparalleled.
We then compiled over 24 hours of footage and sped it up about 10,000 percent so you could enjoy it in 3 minutes instead of 3 days.
iPad + TouchOSC = Amazement!
As a remixer and VJ, the importance of control surfaces have been paramount. It’s our tactile connection to our art. It’s the ability to interface with too many buttons and knobs. It’s how the creativity flows.
Over the years, we have used MIDI, and music keyboard systems. Our favorite to date has been the Novation Remote SL, as it has LCD screens that sync with our software.
A few years ago, we were taken by the Lemur. What a beautiful device! Touch screen interface. Programmable screens, knobs, etc. Unfortunately, it had a pricetag that was about the same as a new Macbook Pro!
I picked up an iPad so I could see what can be done with one of these things. They’re cheap, they’re responsive and now they have apps to control our music and visual arts software! Additionally, you can create your own wireless setup and control your set from across the dancefloor!
The first step is to get TouchOSC. From there other applications can tie directly into Ableton Live, Modul8, Logic, Etc. Don’t let the setup discourage you!
Metanoia
Ten years ago, Hollywood filmmaker Betsy Chasse co-created a movie on science and mysticism (subjects she knew nothing about), and was forevermore plucked from the oblivion of Valley Girl “shoe consciousness.” The movie, “What the Bleep Do We Know!?,” changed her life and the life of millions as it went on to make spiritual cinema history.
Maroon Belles & the CARE Channel
![]()
For the last three years, Bluedot has been filming some of the most beautiful places on the West Coast. A dream project – Bluedot has been shooting and editing 1080p nature cinematography for Healing Healthcare Systems, who operate this great idea… the C.A.R.E. Channel.
The CARE Channel provides beautiful imagery with soft jazz across America’s hospital system, where users can tune into the beauty that nature has to offer, instead of just their regular choice of television programming.
Gimme that data!

Now that we have a couple of Canon EOS 7d’s here at the bluedot studios, we’ve been researching what is the easiest and fastest way to transfer this data to the laptop so we can open the card back again for shooting.
Reviews of DSLR rigs
They’ve done a great job over at the Cinema 5d forums on a shootout on shoulder and tripod rigs for the DSLR filmmaker. These cameras are incredible, but ergonomic they are not! This review will help you find your way in this new world.
Seems that Redrock’s rig didn’t do too well on their review, in fact… before Redrock had them pull it, they had the brief opportunity to let us all know how poorly designed their rig was. I remember that it would sit on their follow focus, and the weight distribution was so far off it wouldn’t sit on your shoulder.
Statement by Brian Valente from Redrock Micro:
“For concerns too numerous to list here, Redrock has requested that our participation in the cinema5D rig review be removed. Redrock will provide an additional detailed statement at a later point. While we cannot support the methods and resulting conclusions of this isolated review, we continue to be supportive of the cinema5D community.”
It must have been a really bad review! I am really surprised that RedRock would take such a hard stance in a public forum where word travels fast. I have used quite a bit of RedRock stuff on our prior JVC HD100, such as their DOF adapter, follow focus, rail system & whips. I thought their workmanship good, albeit I did have to have them replace the FF gear before it was usable. I found the DOF adapter to be a major pain in the field, and shooting docs, it just wasn’t worth the effort. Now using DSLR’s, we have all the DOF we could ever want.
Personally, we’re using the “not ready for primetime” Zacuto knockoffs Magic Spider is creating, and having great luck with them! Sorry Zacuto, but how can you expect independent film makers to afford your stuff?
